Retro-chic memory bank – Black Forest Gateau
Back in the seventies and eighties, when the summers were longer, my waistline was still visible and wrinkles were something that I had in my trendy cheesecloth blouse rather than my face, the height of uber-chic as a desert was a Black Forest Gateau.
It has to be said that the cream in the versions in those days may have been a tad synthetic, the cherries were certainly out of a tin rather than fresh, and the chocolate was rather more of a gritty variety than we have to cook with in these enlightened times, but for some reason this desert stays fondly in the old memory bank.
In 2013 this has to be revisited, freshened and made superlative, with fresh cherries, a generous slosh of kirsch, moist, velvety chocolate cake made with a good quality chocolate, and heavy cream.
It could be done.
I think that it has to be done.
We owe it to the next generation.

I gave you an award here: http://unabashedlypoetic.wordpress.com/2013/01/15/2012-blog-of-the-year/ Love your blog!
Aw, Krystal, that’s very kind. I’m touched that you’re following and that you enjoy my wee ramblings!
On a freezing frosty morning its lovely to be reminded of those cheese cloth blouses matched with jeans from Jean Machine or the wrap around skirt. I haven’t eaten a Black Forrest Gateau for decades. Maybe I might just dust down the recipe.
Ooh, I haven’t thought about wrap around skirts for decades! I used to have a couple of those…very forgiving with a tie at the side rather than a fixed waist..
The one in the pic looks delicious – I’ll have to try this when cherries are in season.
It does look good with whole cherries on top doesn’t it – I don’t ever remember them looking quite like this in the Seventies!
